  • Improper amount of cement

The right proportion of cement must be utilised as its mineral composition, shape, surface texture and grading can make a difference to the thermal coefficient, stiffness, creep and overall strength of concrete.
Keep in mind that richer concrete (that is, a cement content of more than 15%) is more susceptible to cracking.

  • Chemical and temperature factors

Cracks can also occur when there’s an excessive temperature difference within a concrete structure or when the temperatures of different portions within the same concrete slab have exceeded a specific limit.
Sulphate attacks and corrosion, which are often the result of a chemical reaction, are other potential causes of cracking. The volume of concrete also increases when the alkaline nature of cement reacts with carbon dioxide, allowing cracks to form.

  • Poor construction

When the quality of construction is low, the strength of concrete is also compromised. As such, it’s important to avoid defective practices of:

  • inadequate concrete mixing,
  • having excessive water in the mix,
  • improper placement and curing of concrete,
  • poor compaction,
  • insufficient consolidation,
  • unreasonable placements of construction joints or early formwork removal and
  • use of substandard materials.

  1. All cracks should be cleaned out to remove any loose concrete.
  2. If a crack is greater than 3mm wide, cut it out to open up the crack: minimum of 10mm x 10mm & maximum of 30mm x 30mm
  3. Wet the void to be filled before applying MAXGRIP or MAXJOINT ELASTIC where further movement is anticipated.
  4. Mix MAXGRIP powder to a pourable consistency according to technical product specifications, and then pour the mixture into a channel.
  5. If working on a vertical surface, mix MAXGRIP to a trowelable mortar and trowel into a channel.
  6. If you use MAXGRIP, leave it for 15-20 minutes to set. On the other hand, MAXJOINT ELASTIC takes 3 days to set.
  7. Once MAXGRIP or MAXJOINT ELASTIC has set, coat with MAXSEAL FLEX, MAXSEAL FLEX M OR MAXSEAL TRAFFIC according to technical product specifications.
  8. Apply two coats to achieve a complete waterproof seal.
