Performing structural repairs and restoring concrete structural elements with MAXGROUT®

Print

To prolong the life of your building or construction project, it’s important to effectively address and restore any structural issues that are present.

Facilitating structural repairs and concrete restoration is necessary to prevent further damage which can be costly for your business and potentially risky for tradespeople working on your projects onsite.

To do this, you need to select quality products that can deliver lasting durability, strength and protection.

One of these is MAXGROUT® by Scientific Waterproofing Products (SWP).

Let’s find out more about MAXGROUT® and the benefits it offers for construction projects.

About MAXGROUT®

MAXGROUT® is a one-component, non-shrink, high-resistance fluid mortar for fillings, anchoring of bolts cables, etc., and structural repairs.

It contains no chlorides or metal particles and is formulated from special cement and well-graded mineral products that provide high mechanical properties and fluidity.

MAXGROUT® comes in a powdered form and is ready to use – you simply need to mix it with water. MAXGROUT® also meets the requirements of R4 Class according to EN-1504, as well as rebars anchoring according to EN 1504-6.

Where can you apply MAXGROUT®?

Your chosen building substrate can sustain damage for a range of reasons.

This is something you can’t completely avoid, especially if your concrete or structure as a whole is often exposed to water, chemicals, extreme weather and other external factors.

Fortunately, you can rely on MAXGROUT® to assist you in performing structural repairs and concrete restoration.

MAXGROUT®’s various application fields include:

  • The restoration of concrete structural elements recovering their original shapes and functions, including:
    • Concrete repairs affected by corrosion of reinforcements or defects by pouring concrete into formwork
    • Repair of structure damaged by frost, de-icing, salts, mechanical impacts, concrete, etc.
    • Repair of structures subject to dynamic loads
  • Reinforcement of concrete to increase or restore the bearing capacity by screed mortar
  • Restoration and passivation of steel bars
  • Anchoring of pillars in concrete prefabricated structures
  • Filling of steel column bases
  • Providing beam support in bridges
  • Anchoring of bolts, cables, etc.
  • Filling of machinery foundation between concrete and steel plates
  • Repairing joints in pavements
  • Void-filling corrective process and consolidation under concrete slabs

3 benefits of MAXGROUT®

At Scientific Waterproofing Products (SWP), we’re proud of the efficacy of our MAXGROUT® product.

Here are the three main advantages that MAXGROUT® offers Builders and Architects:

1.High levels of strength

MAXGROUT® is highly adhesive, preventing the repair process from failing.

Once applied, MAXGROUT® also becomes a structural part of the substrate, so you can rely on it to withstand repeated loads.

2. Non-shrink and slightly expansive

Because MAXGROUT® is non-shrink and slightly expansive, it does not lose contact with the substrate where it is placed, making this product a highly effective repair material.

In addition, MAXGROUT® offers strong cohesion with fresh mortar without segregation or bleeding.

3. Waterproofing and fireproofing

MAXGROUT® offers extra protection to your surface, ensuring it will remain functional and well-maintained.

Aside from being non-toxic, MAXGROUT® is resistant to water, oil and grease. It is also non-corrosive for steel surfaces, as well as resilient against extreme temperatures.

How to use MAXGROUT®

To get the best results from MAXGROUT®, we’ve prepared a set of instructions and reminders that can assist you in using this product for structural repairs and concrete restoration:

Surface Preparation

  • The surface must be structurally resistant and clean, free of dust, coatings, efflorescence, oil, demolding agents, gypsum or any other foreign material.
  • Before the application of MAXGROUT®, you must waterproof the anchoring cement. While the surface must be saturated with clean water, it’s important that you do not leave any free-standing water.
  • On porous substrates or for very smooth surfaces, a bonding agent such as MAXBOND® should be applied.

Mixing

  1. Pour MAXGROUT® into a clean drum containing part of the water and then start mixing in order to break up any lumps. Use 3 to 3.5 litres of water per 25 kg bag depending on the required consistency (12% and 14% by weight).
  2. Mechanical mixing is recommended using a slow-speed mixing drill (400 – 600 rpm) or a concrete mixer. Mix for 3 to 4 minutes, taking care to avoid the introduction of air bubbles.
  3. Mixing by hand? Increase the mixing time to ensure all lumps have disappeared. Also, do not use more water than the recommended ratio.
  4. Allow the mix to rest for 1 to 2 minutes, so any introduced air bubbles during mixing can disappear. Place MAXGROUT® within the following 15 – 20 minutes.
  5. For volumes greater than about 0.1 m3 or thicknesses greater than 4 cm, a mixture should include 8 kg of dry and clean sand with 3 to 5 mm per 25 kg bag of MAXGROUT® to be made.
  6. Mix everything together with 2.75 to 3L of water per bag, depending on the required consistency. Avoid any bleeding or segregation by using excess water.

Placing

  • MAXGROUT® should be placed through the pouring of waterproof anchoring cement mortar directly from the mixing container.
  • In order to avoid cold joints and minimise the chance of air entrapment, MAXGROUT® should be placed continuously and also in one direction from one side to the other.

If necessary, a manual vibration element can be used in order to help fill the volume. However, an excessive vibration must be avoided as much as possible because it may cause bleeding and air entrapment.

  • Machine pumping application is also possible. Air vents should be provided to facilitate the exit of air from the space to be filled.
  • You may use moulds during the pouring procedure when necessary.

Note: the information provided here must be used in conjunction with the appropriate technical data bulletins and material safety data sheets available from our office or website.
