Waterproofing Magnum Board: Why Drizoro Products are the smart choice

Australian builders, architects and homeowners know that durable construction starts with solid protection against water. No matter how sturdy your materials, moisture is the silent enemy that can weaken structures, drive up maintenance costs and create headaches no one wants.

If you’re working with Magnum Board, a popular choice stocked by Bunnings and trusted by builders across the country, then making sure it’s properly waterproofed is essential to keep your project watertight for years to come.

That’s where high-performance Drizoro products from Scientific Waterproofing Products (SWP) come in.

Backed by years of proven results, Drizoro products give builders, architects and homeowners a simple, reliable way to protect Magnum Board from water damage. Let’s look at why getting the waterproofing right matters and how this system keeps your project safe.

Why Magnum Board needs the right waterproofing

Magnum Board is known for its strength and versatility in residential and commercial builds. But like any board system exposed to moisture, poor waterproofing of magnum boards can lead to leaks, swelling or structural compromise over time.

The solution?

Pair the Magnum Board with a proven waterproofing system that protects joints, seals gaps and creates a flexible, resilient barrier.

With Drizoro’s range of cement-based waterproofing products, you’ll have confidence your Magnum Board stays protected from the elements, no nasty surprises later.

Keep every joint and surface protected

As a builder, you want to know that once the boards are installed, they’re going to stay protected for good. Drizoro products from SWP make that simple.

Proper Magnum Board waterproofing isn’t just a quick coat and hope for the best. It’s about using a complete system that works together from start to finish, so you can get the job done right the first time, with no surprises down the track.

Here’s what a solid Magnum Board waterproofing job should cover:

  • Joints sealed
  • Corners and edges reinforced with Maxmesh
  • Surfaces are fully coated and protected
  • Flexible enough to handle movement

Get these right and you’ll have peace of mind knowing your Magnum Board is waterproofed and will hold up well into the future.

Key considerations when Waterproofing Magnum Board

When you’re waterproofing Magnum Board, it’s worth taking a moment to get it right. Here are a few things you should always keep in mind before you start:

  • Surface Preparation: A clean, debris-free surface ensures the best bond for your waterproofing layer. Old paint, loose particles or dust can weaken adhesion and create gaps for water to sneak through.

  • Joint Sealing: The joints between Magnum Board sheets are common entry points for moisture. Properly filling these gaps and sealing them makes a big difference to the board’s lifespan.

  • Reinforcement: Areas where walls meet floors (or where there’s movement) need added reinforcement. Mesh helps strengthen these spots and keeps the waterproof layer flexible.

  • Flexible Protection: Buildings move and settle over time. Your waterproofing needs to move with it without cracking or splitting.

To address these challenges, our products: Drizoro MAXSEAL® FLEX M, Drizoro MAXJOINT® ELASTIC EXPRESS and Drizoro MAXMESH work together to seal joints, reinforce weak points and create a flexible waterproof barrier.

  • Adheres strongly to cementitious surfaces
  • Remains flexible to handle expansion or contraction

Drizoro MAXSEAL® FLEX M

  • Creates a tough yet flexible barrier at 2 mm thickness, two coats finished
  • Ideal for balconies, basements, water tanks and external walls
  • Excellent adhesion to Magnum Board once the surface is prepped

Drizoro MAXMESH

A reinforcing mesh that strengthens and stabilises your waterproofing layer, especially around tricky areas like corners or joints.

How to waterproof Magnum Board with Drizoro

Ready to get started? Here’s a clear guide to waterproofing Magnum Board using Drizoro products from SWP.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Remove all loose materials and debris. If the board is painted, strip off all paint to expose a clean, sound surface. This is vital for good adhesion.

Step 2: Wet Joints and Fill Gaps

Thoroughly wet the joints between Magnum Board sheets. Apply MAXJOINT® ELASTIC EXPRESS to fill the gaps. Allow it to cure for 72 hours for the best results.

Step 3: Reinforce Joints with MAXSEAL® FLEX M and MAXMESH

Once the joints are filled and cured, wet the joint areas again. Apply a coat of MAXSEAL® FLEX M, then press a 50mm wide strip of MAXMESH across tongue and groove joints into the fresh coat. Ensure the 200mm MAXMESH is embedded neatly into any corners, especially at floor-to-wall junctions. Let this cure overnight.

Step 4: Apply the First Full Coat

Wet the entire Magnum Board surface and apply MAXSEAL® FLEX M at a rate of 1kg per square metre. This forms your first protective membrane. Leave to cure overnight.

Step 5: Extra Reinforcement for Floor/Wall Joints

For added protection where walls meet floors, wet the surface and coat 100mm up the wall and out 100mm on the floor with MAXSEAL® FLEX M at 1kg/m². Embed a 200mm strip of MAXMESH into the first coat while it is wet.

Step 6:  Apply the Second Coat

After a min of 6 hours, wet the surface again and apply a second coat of MAXSEAL® FLEX M, again at 1kg per square metre. This locks in durability and ensures complete coverage.

Step 7: Let It Cure

Allow a minimum of four days before you apply any further finishes like paint, tiles or cladding. This ensures your waterproofing is fully set and ready to do its job.

Important Note: Special Surfaces

If you’re working with exposed/rusted metal surfaces, prep the surface with MAXREST® PASSIVE first.

For areas that will be tiled, pair your system with MAXKOLA® FLEX (for tiling) and MAXJOINT® FLEX (for grouting).
